Below are some recent happenings from the chess world as of 3/2/25:
In the FIDE World Senior Team Chess Championship the US Men’s Team took the gold medal by one game point (24 to 23) over the Italian team in the 50+ section. Not a big surprise since the US was the top seed. I only saw one US Team in the 65+ section, and their finish in 42nd was a good result given their 53rd starting seed out of 54 teams. Turns out the Women’s teams played in the same section but were separated for prizes at the end of the tournament. The USA Women’s Team (50+) earned the 3rd place Bronze Medal out of the 5 female teams. Results can be seen via the link shared 2/23.
Moving to the younger crowd the World Junior Championships just finished 6 of 11 rounds in Montenegro. Currently, the leaderboard has a mix of top seeds and a number middle-ranked players. In 2nd place sits an untitled player from China. The US representative is GM Chasin currently in 39th place. Sadly, there is no US player in the Girls section.
In the past the winner’s list reads like a who’s who of top chess talent. Winners and future World Champions include: Anand, Karpov, Kasparov, and Spassky for the men with Zhu Chen for the women. Other winners have become WCC Challengers.
