Below are some recent happenings from the chess world:
In The Women’s World Chess Championship match, the current WWCC Wenjun, Ju leads challenger Zhongyi, Tan 5-2 after winning games 5, 6, and 7. The match took a 2 day break as they move from Shanghai to Chonqing. The FIDE Youtube channel broadcasts live. Games start at midnight CA time. Hopefully Tan can muster up a respectable finish or else the match may be over in a couple more games.
The European Women’s Chess Championship turned out to be a one woman show with IM Teodora Injac winning outright with 9/11. Her nearest competitors finished 1.5 points behind. The winner lost her first game but then reeled off 9 wins in a row before taking a 9 move draw in the final round.
To no big surprise the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam stop in Paris will feature a final of GM Magnus Carlsen vs. GM Hikaru Nakamura who are world #1 and #2, respectively and the only two currently over 2800 rating in regular chess. Carlsen won the first of the two game match early this morning.
The next leg of the FIDE Women’s Grand Prix starts on 4/14/25 in Pune, India. With the top 4 Indian women playing hopefully this will garner big support given the notoriety of the Indian men. Three of the four Indian women were part of the gold medal winning team at the 2024 Chess Olympiad. As usual, you can see the games on lichess - FIDE Women's Grand Prix 2024/25 | Pune • Round 1 • lichess.org
In sadder news, GM Fridrik Olafsson recently passed away. He was FIDE President during the 1981 Karpov-Korchnoi World Championship Match.
